Men's Golf Finishes Seventh At Firestone Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron men's golf team wrapped up three rounds of play Tuesday at the 2009 Firestone Invitational carding a seventh place 897 at the par-72, 7,060-yard world renowned Firestone Country Club North Course.
After Akron fired two rounds of 296 during day one of the two-day, 11 team event, the 69-player field faced day two temperatures in the 40's and 20-mile winds which pushed UA to a 305 round three mark.
Individually sophomore Ryan Mason finished first for the Zips and in a tie for 16th overall carding a consistent 74-75-74 for a 5-over 223 score.
Zips newcomers Lucas Murray and Cameron Simmons finished in a tie for 20th carding a 224. Murray fired off two rounds of 74 during day one followed by a 76 Tuesday. Simmons also went round for round during day one posting two rounds of 73 followed by a round three total of 78.
Junior Scott Landreth and senior Jacob Patte rounded out the Zips scorecard in the event. Landreth posted a 226 (75-74-77) for a 30th place tie while Patte carded a 235 (78-79-78) overall.
Individually, three Zips competed for Akron with the group led by junior Doug Underwood who posted a 226 (71-77-78). Underwood's 1-under 71 was the only under par score for the Zips during tournament play.
Junior Drew Davidson and sophomore Steve Bednar finished within two strokes of each other carding 241 (78-81-82) and 243 (81-77-85).
With three individuals placing in the top-15, St. Mary's College took home the team title firing off a 5-over, 291-286-292 (869). Western Carolina's Ricky Stout was the individual medalist posting an impressive 5-under 211 (69-70-72).
The Zips will take a week off before they return to action Oct. 26-27 when they travel to Chattanooga, Tenn. for the Aldila Intercollegiate to be held at the Council Fire Golf Club.
