October 23 | Women's Tennis
- University of Akron freshman tennis player Prang Pantusart advanced herself into Friday's singles qualifying round of 16 at the Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, being held on Thursday at Northwestern's Combe Indoor Tennis Center. For the third-straight season a Zips athlete finds herself in the final round of singles qualifying play, with Anya Baronayte doing so in 2008 and Tanyaradzwa Gombera in 2007.
Pantusart, who earned a bye out of Thursday's opening round of 64, posted a 6-3, 6-0 win over Marquette's Rachael Hush in the round of 32. Pantusart will compete against DePaul's Kirsten Gambrell at 10 a.m. ET on Friday in the round of 16. UA junior Anya Baronayte, who also enjoyed an opening-round bye, lost to Marquette's Kelly Barry 6-2, 7-6 (4) in the round of 32.
The Zips pairs of Pantusart and freshman Angelika Jogasuria, and sophomore Zara Harutyunyan and freshman Angelina Jogasuria will compete in Friday's first two rounds of the doubles main draw. Both teams have first round byes. Harutyunyan and the Jogasuria sisters were also accepted into the singles main draw, which begins on Saturday. Harutyunyan, the 2009 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, will be competing in the singles main draw for the second-straight season. In last year's event, she advanced to the round of 32, where she was defeated in three sets by the fifth-seeded and 41st-ranked player in the nation.
The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships.
