Harutyunyan Advances at ITA All-American Singles Pre-Qualifier
October 04 | Women's Tennis
- University of Akron sophomore tennis player Zara Harutyunyan posted a pair of victories in Saturday's singles pre-qualifier of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at L.A. Tennis Center.
Competing in a 64-player draw, Harutyunyan needs to win just one more match to earn one of the eight open spots in the 64-player qualifying event, which takes place on Oct. 6-7 at Riviera Tennis Club. She will face off against Florida's Claire Bartlett on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET for the right to compete in next week's qualifier.
Following a 6-3, 6-3 defeat of Colorado's Camilla Belassi on Saturday morning, Harutyunyan topped Alabama's Alexa Guarachi 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5) in the afternoon. Guarachi was the third-seed in the pre-qualifier and the top-seeded player in Harutyunyan's portion of the bracket.
The Riviera is one of three national championship events for collegiate tennis, with the other two being the ITA National Indoor Championships and the NCAA Championships. Harutyunyan is the first-ever UA player to participate in the event.
