Men's Golf Cards 9-Under For First Place at Xavier
October 06 | Men's Golf
- The University of Akron men's golf team sits in a season-high
first place Monday after two rounds at the Xavier Invitational.
Participating in the tournament for the fourth consecutive year the
Zips have traditionally done well at the event and will head into
Tuesday's final round carding a 9-under 567 (284-283) with four
Zips in the top-25 of the 69-player field.
"Our deeper team is still the big change for us this season," said
head coach Nick Goetze. "All of our
guys are capable of shooting under par and this ability has been so
important in keeping our team in contention."
The Zips are led by junior transfer Lucas Murray who carded
6-under 138 (66-72) on the par-72, 6,921-yard Oasis Golf Club for a
second place mark just one stroke behind Depauls' Russell Band.
"Lucas finally took it really low for us today," said Goetze. "He's
been so close to catching a hot round during the first two events
and it was just a matter of time. His 66 in the morning included
eight birdies over a nine-hole stretch and he played steady from
there."
Sophomore Ryan Mason sits second for
UA carding a 142 (73-69) and is eighth overall. Sophomore Scott
Landreth and senior Jacob Patte follow Mason
sitting 14th and 21st overall. Landreth posted a 143 (73-70) and
Patte trailed just one stroke behind with a 144 carding two rounds
of 72.
Freshman Cameron Simmons rounded out
the Zips scorecard posting an 81 in round one but put up a par-72
to cap off the day.
Junior Drew Davidson competed
individually on the day posting a 153 (77-76) for a 54th place
tie.
Tomorrow's third and final round is set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun
start.
This is the final tournament before the Zips return home for the
Firestone Invitational (Oct. 12-13) to be held at the world
renowned Firestone Country Club.
