Harutyunyan Loses in ITA All-American Singles Qualifier
October 07 | Women's Tennis
- University of Akron sophomore tennis player Zara Harutyunyan lost to UCLA's Andrea Remynse on Tuesday afternoon in the first round of qualifying singles competition at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at Riviera Tennis Club.
Harutyunyan was defeated by a count of 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-2 in a match that took over three hours to complete. She twice had an opportunity to score the match point in the second set, but Remynse, who is ranked 37th nationally, managed to hit winning volleys both times.
"This was a tough loss," Akron head coach Jeffrey Wyshner said. "Zara should be proud of how she played. One more good bounce in the second set would have won it for her."
Harutyunyan, the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, went on to lose 6-0, 6-2 to McCall Jones from Brigham Young in consolation play on Tuesday night.
The first-ever UA player to participate in the ITA All-American Championships, Harutyunyan scored three wins in two days to advance herself out of last weekend's 64-player pre-qualifying singles competition and into the 64-person qualifying component of the event. She owns a 9-2 record in singles play this fall.
