The eight-team annual event runs Friday-Sunday at NU's Vandy Christie Outdoor Tennis Center, with play scheduled to begin each day at 10 a.m. ET. In addition to Northwestern and Akron, the field includes DePaul, Michigan State, Minnesota, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Wisconsin. The tournament format will consist of four singles brackets and two doubles draws. There is the threat of rain in the Evanston area this weekend, and in the event of inclement weather the weekend's action will move indoors to the Combe Tennis Center.
Representing Akron in the "A" singles flight this weekend will be identical twin sisters and freshmen Angelika and Angelina Jogasuria, while junior Anya Baronayte and freshman Prang Pantusart will lineup in "B" singles. Junior Jeremie Benjamin will play in the "C" singles bracket and junior Carolina Castro Cota in the "D" singles draw. In "A" doubles play, Angelika will pair with Baronayte and Angelina with Pantusart. Benjamin and Castro Cota will pair up in "B" doubles.
Playing in its third tournament of the season, Akron has enjoyed a highly-successful fall as the Zips won five of nine singles flights and three of four doubles draws at the Bowling Green Invitational on Sept. 19-20, and then claimed two singles flights and the only doubles bracket at the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State on Sept. 25-27.
The highlights continued for UA last weekend, when sophomore Zara Harutyunyan scored three wins in two days to advance herself out of the 64-player pre-qualifying singles draw and into the 64-person qualifying component of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Los Angeles. She was the first-ever UA player to participate in the event, which features the top-144 players in the nation.
In round one of qualifying play on Tuesday, Harutyunyan lost 6-7 (5), 7-6 (5), 6-2 to UCLA's Andrea Remynse, in a match that took over three hours to complete. Harutyunyan twice had an opportunity to score the match point in the second set, but Remynse, who is ranked 37th nationally, managed to hit winning volleys both times. Harutyunyan is not scheduled to be in the Akron lineup this weekend at Northwestern.
