AKRON, Ohio - For the first time since 2007, The University of Akron men's golf team will host a home tournament welcoming 11 teams to the 2009 Firestone Invitational. The event will be played at the world renowned Firestone Country Club North Course which is a par-72, 7,060-yard layout.
The tournament will consist of three days of golf beginning with the practice round on Sunday, Oct. 11 at 1:00 p.m. The three-round, 54-hole tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 12 with the final round teeing off from holes one and ten at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13.
In the event, the Zips will be playing alongside fellow Mid-American Conference schools Eastern Michigan and Toledo along with Kansas State, Kentucky, Marquette, Maryland, Michigan State, Pacific, Rhode Island, St. Mary's College, and Western Carolina.
Akron enters the Firestone Invitational coming off a first place finish at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 5-6), arguably the Zips best performance under the tenure of third year head coach Nick Goetze.
Winning the title by seven strokes carding a 15-under 849 (284-283-282), junior Lucas Murray also claimed the individual nod, the first Zip to do so since current assistant coach Colin Clemente won the top prize at the Tri-Meet (April 22, 2007). Murray finished 10-under 206 carding a 66-72-68 and was one of just four Zips to finish in the top-15 of the 69-player field.
The Firestone Country Club North Course serves as the home course for Akron men's golf. The championship course, opened in 1969, has been rated by Golf Digest as one of Ohio's top-10 courses.
