Men's Golf Tied For Third Thru First Round

Cashiers, N.C. - After 18 holes at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate, The University of Akron men's golf team sits tied for third in the 18-team, 102-player field carding a 2-over, 286 on the par-71, 6,797-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley.
"The guys had a solid round today," said head coach Nick Goetze. "I was pleased with the way they stayed patient and waited for their birdie opportunities. We finished well here last season and we should be in position for tomorrow to close out the fall strong."
Participating in the event for the second consecutive season, UA finished third of 14 teams during the 2008 season.
Two Zips sit in the top-10 after day one with Akron junior Lucas Murray leading the way. Carding a 3-under 68 during round one of the 36-hole event Murray is tied for second overall. Sophomore Ryan Mason posted a 1-under 70 and sits tied for ninth in the field.
Freshman Cameron Simmons posted another solid score in his sixth collegiate tournament carding a 2-over 73 sitting tied for the 36th spot heading into round two.
Junior Doug Underwood and sophomore Scott Landreth round out UA's scorecard carding a 75 and 79 respectively.
Senior Jacob Patte was the only Zip to compete as a individual posting a 3-over 74 tying for 50th.
Hosted by Western Carolina, the event also includes Appalachian State, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Elon, Gardner-Webb, Francis Marion, Furman, High Point, Mercer, Radford, Samford, Vanderbilt, Wofford, Chattanooga, Kentucky and Winthrop.
The University of Kentucky leads the team portion through round one scoring a 5-under, 279. Furman University's Garland Ferrell sits atop the individual field carding a 4-under 67.
