Murray Leads Zips In Final Fall Tournament
November 04 | Men's Golf
- Led by junior Lucas Murray, The University
of Akron men's golf team finished the fall off strong Tuesday at
the Hummingbird Intercollegiate tying for sixth of 18 teams carding
a 8-over 576 on the par-71, 6,797-yard Country Club of Sapphire
Valley.
Murray led the Zips individually in their last tournament of the
fall carding a 5-under 137 (68-69) finishing second overall, his
second best finish as a Zip. Murray's best mark came at the Xavier
Invitational (Oct. 5-6) when he took home the top spot.
Junior Doug Underwood followed
Murray on the course posting a 3-over 145. After struggling in the
first round scoring a 75, Underwood rebounded carding a five stroke
better mark of 70 during round two. Overall Underwood finished in a
tie for 33rd in the 102-player field. Sophomore Scott
Landreth also struggled during the first 18 holes posting a 79
which was followed by a solid 72 in the final round totaling a
9-over 152 tying for 71st overall.
"We almost had a very good finish today," said head coach Nick
Goetze. "Murray had another dominant performance and Underwood
and Landreth really came through as well. We didn't have the fourth
score we needed to move up the leader board but I was still pleased
with the progress our team has made this year."
Freshman Cameron Simmons and
sophomore Ryan Mason rounded out UA's
scorecard posting a 152 (73-79) and 153 (70-83) respectively.
Lone UA senior Jacob Patte competed as an
individual in the tournament carding a 4-over 146 posting solid
rounds of 74 and 72 tying for 38th overall.
Hosted by Western Carolina, the event also included Appalachian
State, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Elon, Gardner-Webb,
Francis Marion, Furman, High Point, Mercer, Radford, Samford,
Vanderbilt, Wofford, Chattanooga, Kentucky and Winthrop.
Day one leader Kentucky was eclipsed by Furman that erased a
six-stroke lead over the final six holes to rally past the Wildcats
for the team win. First-round leader Garland Ferrell helped lead
the Paladin charge, carding three birdies on the back nine and
eagled the par-5, 482-yard 14th hole for a second-consecutive day
to win the individual medalist honors.
The Zips will return to the links in 2010 participating in the
Mobile Bay Intercollegiate, Feb. 21-23, at the Magnolia Grove Golf
Club in Mobile, Ala.
