November 09 | Women's Tennis
HOUSTON - The University of Akron tennis team closed out its appearance at the Cougar Fall Draw at the University of Houston by claiming a championship in the top-three singles flights and the No. 2 doubles bracket on Sunday.
UA sophomore Zara Harutyunyan posted a 6-2, 7-6 (3) win over Tulane's Mariam Kurdadze in the Flight A final. Kurdadze was the bracket's No. 2 seed, meaning that Harutyunyan knocked off both of the bracket's top-two seeds en route to the title. In Friday's quarterfinal round, she scored a three-set win over Rice's Rebekka Hanle - the event's No. 1 seed.
Also in Sunday's championship matches, UA freshman Angelika Jogasuria got a 6-3, 6-4 decision over Rice's Rebecca Lin in Flight B and freshman Prang Pantusart battled to a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-0 victory over Tulane's Lindsay Dvorak in Flight C.
Harutyunyan, Jogasuria and Pantusart went 4-0 in singles play over the three-day event.
In the B doubles flight final, the Zips' duo of Pantusart and Jogasuria scored an 8-3 win over McNeese State's Ilona Serchenko and Kwynn Biggs. Pantusart and Jogasuria posted three victories on Saturday to advance themselves into Sunday's championship and gave up just seven points over the weekend - posting an 8-0 win in Saturday's opening round and then a pair of 8-2 decision later that day.
The event was the final one in the fall component of UA's schedule. The team will be idle until competing in the Johan Kriek Classic at Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla., on Jan. 15-18.
