December 30 | Women's Tennis
COSTA MESA, Calif. - University of Akron tennis
players and identical twin sisters Angelina
and Angelika Jogasuria were
crowned co-champions in the singles bracket and teamed up to win
the doubles draw of the Costa Mesa Intercollegiate Classic held
over the last several days at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center. The
event is an open USTA competition that draws some of the top
collegiate players from around the nation during the break between
the fall and spring season.
In singles play, Angelina scored a win over the flight's No. 3 seed
in the round of 16 and defeated the No. 1 seed in the semifinal. In
doubles, the freshmen pair would have faced the draw's top-seeded
duo in the semifinal, but that team withdrew from competition. The
Jogasuria's then posted an 8-3 score in the title match. The
sisters won each of their singles matches in straight sets.
Angelina posted four singles wins and Angelika had three singles
victories, after earning a bye in the opening round of 32.
Angelika finished her first fall season with UA with a 14-2 singles record and an 11-3 mark in doubles play, while Angelina went 8-5 in singles and 11-3 in doubles. Results from this week's competition will not count toward their collegiate career record.
The Zips begin the spring component of their schedule on Jan. 15-18, when they travel to Fort Myers, Fla., for the Johan Kriek Classic at Florida Gulf Coast.
