Baronayte Named MAC Tennis Athlete of the Week
April 15 | Women's Tennis
University of Akron sophomore Anna
Baronayte (St. Petersburg, Russia/Arystos Lyceum/West Virginia
State/St. Petersburg State) was named Mid-American Conference
Women's Tennis Player of the Week for the period ending April 14,
the league office announced on Wednesday.
This is the first time Baronayte has received the award and it
marks the fourth time this season that a Zips' tennis athlete has
been honored as such, with freshman Zara
Harutyunyan being selected on Jan. 22 and Feb. 25, and senior
Tanyaradzwa Gombera getting recognized on Feb.
18.
Baronayte finished last week with a combined 4-0 record, behind a
pair of victories on both the doubles and singles court, as Akron
split its two matches. In UA's 6-1 win over Bowling Green on
Friday, she notched a 7-5, 6-0 No. 2 singles decision, after
winning 8-3 at No. 1 doubles with Harutyunyan. The victory marked
UA's first over the Falcons since 1993.
In Saturday's 4-3 loss to nationally-ranked Western Michigan,
Baronayte won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 singles and 8-4 at No. 1 doubles
with Harutyunyan. Against WMU, UA claimed the doubles point for the
11th time in 12 matches, and handed the Broncos their first loss of
the doubles point against a MAC opponent since Marshall won the
early point over WMU in the 2005 MAC Championship title match.
In dual-match singles play this season she is 17-4 (28-15 overall)
and is 19-1 on the dual doubles court (32-6 overall).
Akron (15-6, 4-3 MAC) closes out its regular season on Saturday at
Buffalo (12-5, 5-2 MAC) and prepares for the league tournament to
be held April 23-26 on the campus of Bowling Green. The Zips have
already secured a bye in the first round of the championship
event.
