Final Round of Cavalier Classic Canceled Due to Lightning
April 26 | Men's Golf
Charlottesville, Va. - The final round of the 22nd Annual Cavalier Classic was canceled due to lightning Sunday giving the men's golf team an 11th place finish at the tournament. The Zips carded a 13-over, 301 at the par-72, 6,875-yard Birdwood Golf Course.
"The golf course was the perfect course to help us prepare for
next week's Mid-American Conference Championship," said head coach
Nick Goetze. "The firm, fast greens and the thick
rough presented a challenge and the guys handled the conditions
fairly well. Even though round two was canceled, I feel like we are
beginning to play much better."
Freshman Scott Landreth (Stratford, Ontario/St. Michaels Catholic) finished first for the Zips in their last regular-season tournament posting a 73 (36-37) tying for 21st. Fellow freshman Tim Lew (Courtice, Ontario/Courtice Secondary), who just recently returned to the links after injury, was second for UA tying for 39th overall in the 100-player field carding a 3-over, 75 (38-37).
Ryan Mason (Bridgeport, W. Va./Bridgeport), also in his inaugural year of collegiate competition, senior David Addison (Stewarton, Scotland/Stewarton Academy) and junior Jacob Patte (Oshawa, Ontario/Eastdale Collegiate) all finished within one stroke of each other with Mason leading the way shooting a 76 (36-40) tying for 46th place. Addison followed with a 77 (39-38) and Patte rounded out the scorecard with a 78 (36-42).
The 18-team tournament was won by No. 13 South Carolina. The Gamecocks shot 2-under 286 to hold a six-stroke advantage over host Virginia. Other participating teams included Appalachian State, Augusta State, East Carolina, Francis Marion, George Mason, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Maryland, Radford, Rutgers, Seton Hall, Towson, UNC Wilmington and Villanova.
Akron will compete in its final tournament of the 2008-09 season
next weekend (April 30-May 2) at the MAC championships to be held
at the Brickyard Crossing Golf Club in Indianapolis, Ind.
