Tennis Recruiting Class Receives More National Acclaim
June 01 | Women's Tennis
AKRON, Ohio The University of Akron
women's tennis team's 2009-10 recruiting class continues to be
listed among the nation's best, according to the TennisRecruiting.net spring top-25 poll
released on Monday.
Zips' fourth-year head coach Jeffrey Wyshner announced the completion of the
class last week, with the signing of Prang Pantusart (Amphur Muang,
Nonthaburi, Thailand/Distance Education Institute). Pantusart joins
twins Angelina and Angelika
Jogasuria (Serpong, Indonesia/St. John's School), who signed in
November, in UA's incoming class.
The Zips are one of 11 teams listed in the others receiving votes
category in the top-25 balloting, tying Marshall with two tallies
apiece. Further, Akron was the only school from the Mid-American
Conference to be recognized and joined Ohio State as the only
programs from the state on the list. In February, the Zips'
recruiting class (with Pantusart included as an unsigned
commitment) received votes in the web site's winter poll (received
six votes, view
poll) and that marked the second-consecutive year that UA's
incoming class was mentioned among the nation's best (received
three votes in spring 2008, view poll).
"It's exciting to have what I believe is an outstanding incoming
class receive this type of recognition," Wyshner said. "The fact
that the nation's collegiate tennis experts have taken notice of
our freshmen class for the second-straight year speaks to the
direction the program is headed. I can't wait for these three
impact players to arrive on campus and begin getting ready to
compete."
Akron's 2008-09 incoming class consisted of freshman Zara
Harutyunyan and sophomore transfer Anna
Baronayte. Harutyunyan capped off her rookie season by being
named the MAC Player of the Year and to the all-league first team,
while Baronayte was picked to the All-MAC Second Team. Harutyunyan
is the first Zips tennis athlete to be named conference player of
the year and it marked the first time the UA tennis program has
placed two players on the all-league team in the same season.
A panel made up of journalists, tournament directors, referees and ranking chairmen vote on the top classes. Schools received 25 points for each first-place vote, 24 points for each second-place vote, on down to one point for each 25th-place vote.
The web site's mid-major recruiting poll, in which UA ranked
12th last season (view poll), is scheduled to be released later
this month.
In other Akron tennis news, the Zips have completed their 2009-10 schedule.
