June 24 | Men's Golf
AKRON, Ohio - For the second time in as many years, The University of Akron juniors Doug Underwood (Stow, Ohio/Stow) and Drew Davidson (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) will compete in the Mid-Ohio Golf Association (MOGA) Invitational to be held this weekend (June 27-28) at the Hickory Flats Greens Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ohio.
Tying for ninth at the 2008 event, Underwood played in two
events for the Zips during the 2008-09 season averaging 81.50 on
the green. Davidson, who tied for 31st at last year's tournament
competed in three events for UA finishing the season with a 80.11
stroke average.
The 45th installment of the tournament is a 36-hole amateur golf championship played annually at the 6,600-yard, par-72 Hickory Flat Greens Golf Course. Always played on the last full weekend in June, the field is limited to 102 entrants.
Paired in threesomes, golfers begin play each morning at 8:30
a.m. On the second day, players are paired by score with those with
the lowest first round scores in the final groups. If needed to
determine a champion, a sudden-death play-off will commence on the
first hole shortly after the last threesome finishes on Sunday.
Hickory Flat Greens, designed by Jack Kidwell and opened in 1969,
has eight par four holes, five par three holes and five par five
holes. Hickory Flat Greens has a course rating of 70.4 and a Slope
of 109. The competitive course record is 62 shot by Zach Sebert in
the Mid-Ohio Invitational in 2007. The median score in the
championship over the last two years is 75.
Not limited to golfers who reside in Ohio, the predominantly Ohio field also shows golfers from Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
