AKRON, Ohio - Recently graduated University of Akron tennis student-athlete Tanyaradzwa Gombera was named women's tennis head coach at Malone University in nearby Canton on Monday. Gombera, who is a native of Harare, Zimbabwe, was a four-year letterwinner for the Zips and graduated in May 2009 with a bachelor's degree in marketing.
Gombera played at No. 1 singles for the Zips as a freshman, sophomore and junior, and received All-Mid-American Conference Second-Team honors in 2007 (as a sophomore). She was the first Akron player since 1995 to achieve more than 100 career wins and is ranked in the top 10 in that category in school history. Additionally, Gombera was a two-time recipient of the MAC's Leanne Grimes Davidge Sportsmanship Award (2006 and 2008, freshman and junior seasons), given annually given to one league player who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship.
"I'm just happy to be a part of the Malone family, which has a
wonderful athletic tradition," Gombera said. "I'm excited to be the
new head coach and I'm looking forward to leading the team to much
success both academically and athletically, and also to providing
spiritual leadership and nurturing as well. I want to thank
athletic director Charlie Grimes for giving me this wonderful
opportunity."
"Coach Gombera has outstanding tennis playing experience from her
success in the Mid-American Conference and playing abroad," Malone
director of athletics Charlie Grimes said. "She also possesses
great maturity and a deep commitment to the ideals that we hold
highest here at Malone University. I'm thrilled to add her to our
staff and can't wait to see the influence she will have with our
student-athletes."
