Men's Golf Opens Strong at Maryland Intercollegiate

- The University of Akron men's golf team started the 2009 fall
season off strong Saturday carding 583 (288-295) strokes over two
rounds of play at the Maryland Intercollegiate.
Ending in fifth place overall and able to complete both rounds not
all teams were able to finish due to darkness. The remaining teams
still needing to complete the second round will begin at 7:15 a.m.
Sunday with the third and final round for all teams to follow.
"I was pleased with our start today," said head coach Nick
Goetze. "Although we lost some ground in the afternoon, all
contributed key rounds. Our team has much more depth than previous
seasons and I know we'll have an excellent chance to finish strong
tomorrow."
Two newcomers shined for UA during the first rounds of the fall
season with freshman Cameron Simmons leading the
Zips carding a 3-over 145 (72-73) on the day. Fellow newcomer Lucas
Murray is second for UA hitting a 5-over 147 (73-74). Also
second is sophomore Ryan Mason who was the only
Zip to shoot par carding a 71 in the first round, Mason struggled
in the second grabbing a 76 on the links.
Sophomore Scott Landreth and junior Doug
Underwood round out the Zips scorecard scoring a 151 and 156 on
the day. Both carded rounds of 72 but struggled in the other
carding a 79 and 84.
Other schools participating in the Maryland Intercollegiate are
Virginia Commonwealth, East Carolina, Xavier, NC State, Kent State,
Georgetown, Towson, Penn, Old Dominion, William & Mary,
Virginia, Texas State and North Carolina.
