Freshman Simmons Leads Zips at Maryland Intercollegiate
September 13 | Men's Golf
. - The University of Akron men's golf team started the 2009
fall season off strong Sunday carding 883 (288-295-300) strokes for
a seventh place finish at the Maryland Intercollegiate.
"The course was set tough today with the tees stretched to the back
so par was a solid score on many holes," said head coach Nick
Goetze. "Although we didn't get a lot of putts to fall today
the guys kept grinding to the finish. It wasn't the finish we
wanted, but we're definitely starting stronger than last
season."
Two newcomers shined for UA during their first event as a Zip with
freshman Cameron Simmons leading UA
carding a 7-over 220 (72-73-75) finishing in a tie for 23rd
overall. Fellow newcomer, junior transfer Lucas Murray, finished
second for UA and tied for 27th in the 81-player field shooting a
8-over 221 (73-74-74).
"Our new additions, Simmons and Murray, did a great job in their
first outing with our squad," said Goetze. "I'm very excited about
the way they stepped right in and led the way for us this
week."
Sophomore Ryan Mason was the only Zip
to shoot par at the tournament carding a 71 in the first round,
Mason struggled in the second and third grabbing a 76 and 78 on the
links.
Sophomore Scott Landreth and junior Doug
Underwood rounded out the Zips scorecard posting a 224
(72-79-73) and 237 (84-72-81)
Other schools participating in the Maryland Intercollegiate were
Virginia Commonwealth, East Carolina, Xavier, NC State, Kent State,
Georgetown, Towson, Penn, Old Dominion, William & Mary,

The Zips will return to the links Sept. 25-27 at the Mason Rudolph
