Tennis Cleans Up at Bowling Green Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The University of Akron tennis team closed out Sunday's final day of the Bowling Green Invitational by claiming championships at flights 1-4 and 6 singles, as well as winning the 1-3 doubles brackets. The 10-team event, which included nine singles flights and four doubles flights, was not team scored. The Zips closed out the two-day event with a 25-4 record (16-4 singles, 9-0 doubles)
Leading the way for UA in flight 1 singles was sophomore Zara Harutyunyan, who got the best of Bowling Green's Christine Chiricosta 6-0, 6-4 in the title match. Harutyunyan, the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, also won the flight 1 singles bracket at the 2008 BGSU Invite (her first collegiate weekend of competition).
UA's three freshman each opened their collegiate career with a bang. Identical twin sisters, Angelina and Angelika Jogasuria, were winners of the second and third singles flights, respectively. Angelina topped IPFW's Amy Recht 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 in flight 2, while Angelika defeated Eastern Michigan's Miriam Westerink 6-1, 6-2 in flight 3. Flight 4 singles was won by Prang Pantusart, when she downed Bowling Green's Samantha Kintzel in 1-6, 6-2, 6-1.
Zips' junior Anya Baronayte won the flight 6 bracket, disposing of Eastern Michigan's Celine Donnet 6-4, 7-5.
All three of UA's doubles pairs were champs in their respective flights, and each faced little resistance. The team of Angelina Jogasuria and Harutyunyan did so at No. 1, scoring an 8-3 win over BGSU's Maddy Eccleston and Chiricosta. At No. 2, it was Angelika Jogasuria and Baronayte topping EMU's Karina Ahuja and Donnet 8-3. At No. 3, junior Jeremie Benjamin and Pantusart were 8-4 victors over IPFW's Kate Brien and Recht.
The Zips' early season schedule continues on Sept. 25-27, when they travel to the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State.
