Tennis Claims Three Flights at Spartan Invitational
September 28 | Women's Tennis
- The University of Akron tennis team closed out Sunday's final
day of the 20th-annual Spartan Invitational at Michigan State by
claiming the title of flight B singles and flight A doubles. The
10-team event was not team scored.
In "B" singles (white draw), freshman Angelika Jogasuria topped Riekie Honiball from Miami (Ohio) 6-1, 6-2 to earn her second flight championship of the young season. At last weekend's Bowling Green Invitational she was crowned the winner of flight 3 singles and is now 7-0 against singles competition this season.
In "A" doubles (green draw), the UA team of Zara Harutyunyan and Angelina Jogasuria (Angelika's indentical twin) earned an 8-3 championship tally over Toledo's Martina Wodzinski and Maha Guirguis. It was also the second-straight week that pair claimed a tournament's top doubles flight, winning flight 1 at the BGSU Invite. That duo is 8-0 in doubles play this season, posting a 5-0 record this weekend.
On Saturday, Harutyunyan and Angelika Jogasuria both advanced to the finals of "A" singles (red draw) and instead of squaring off against one another, agreed to be co-champions of the bracket. They are both 6-0 versus singles opposition thus far this season, after each won their respective singles draws at the BGSU Invite a week ago (Harutyunyan at flight 1 and Jogasuria at flight 2).
Harutyunyan will compete in the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., from Oct. 3-11. The Zips resume team competition on Oct. 9-11 at the Wildcat Invitational at Northwestern.
