Men's Golf Solid After Day One At Firestone Invitational

Akron, Ohio - The University of Akron men's golf team sits comfortably in seventh place after two rounds at the second annual Firestone Invitational. Holding a 581 (291-290) heading into the final day of play, the Zips are just three stokes out of fourth place and six out of the third spot on the par-72, 7,060-yard layout.
"Our team rounds were fairly consistent and hopefully we can utilize our home course knowledge to put together some rounds in the 60's and move up the board tomorrow," said head coach Nick Goetze."
A 13-team event, the Zips are playing alongside fellow Mid-American Conference schools Eastern Michigan and Toledo along with Illinois State, No. 36 Indiana, Iowa, Kansas State, Maryland, No. 37 New Mexico State, No. 34 Notre Dame, St. Mary's College, Wichita State and No. 39 Xavier.
Notre Dame and Indiana are battling it out for first place carding a 12-under 564 heading into round three. IU's David Erdy is the individual leader posting a nine under 70-65 (135).
Junior Scott Landreth leads Akron in the 75-player field carding a 70-74 (144) for a 17th place tie. Senior Lucas Murray and freshman Charlie Bull are tied in the 21st spot with a 145. Murray posted a 73-72 while Bull carded a 74-71. Freshman Drew Czuchry and sophomore Cameron Simmons round out the Zips carding a 150 (77-73) and 152 (74-78).
The Zips also have four players competing as individuals with redshirt sophomore Tim Lew leading the way with a 150 (75-75). Senior Doug Underwood and junior Ryan Mason follow with a 151 (76-75) and 152 (75-77). Redshirt junior Kevin Pikus rounds out the Zips scorecard with a 160 (87-73).
The Firestone Country Club North Course serves as the home course for Akron men's golf. The championship course, opened in 1969, has been rated by Golf Digest as one of Ohio's top-10 courses.
