Zips Conclude Firestone Invitational In Eighth Place
October 12 | Men's Golf
Akron, Ohio - The University of Akron men's golf team finished eighth Tuesday at the second annual Firestone Invitational carding a 15-over, 291-290-298 (879) at the Firestone Country Club North Course, home of the Akron Zips.
"Today we needed a team round of at least even par or better to make a move up the board," said head coach Nick Goetze. "The top of line up was not as sharp this week but fortunately we had more solid play in our four and five positions. Hopefully, all of our guys will find their rhythm for our final two fall events."
A 13-team event, the Zips welcomed fellow Mid-American Conference schools Eastern Michigan and Toledo along with Illinois State, No. 36 Indiana, Iowa, Kansas State, Maryland, No. 37 New Mexico State, No. 34 Notre Dame, St. Mary's College, Wichita State and No. 39 Xavier to the event.
Notre Dame and Indiana battled it out for first place with Indiana prevailing with a 849, one stroke ahead of the Fighting Irish. IU's David Erdy and Maryland's John Popeck were the individual medalists posting a 207 in the 56-hole event.
Junior Scott Landreth led Akron on the par-72, 7,060-yard layout carding a 70-74-72 (216) to finish in a tie for 10th and the only Zip at par.
"Scott really played well this week and his gutsy finish with two birdies and an eagle in the closing four holes was a great way to close out another strong tournament," said Goetze.
Following Landreth was true freshman Charlie Bull who finished in the top-25 posting a 74-71-75 (220). Senior Lucas Murray finished at 32nd with a 222 (73-72-77) in the 75-player field. Sophomore Cameron Simmons and freshman Drew Czuchry rounded out the Zips scorecard finishing within one stroke of each other at 226 (74-78-74) and 227 (77-73-77).
The Zips also had four players competing as individuals with junior Ryan Mason and redshirt sophomore Tim Lew finishing at 226 (75-77-74) and 227 (75-75-77). Senior Doug Underwood finished at 229 (76-75-78) and Kevin Pikus posted a 236 (87-73-76).
After taking a week off, Akron will compete in the Memphis Intercollegiate slated for Oct. 25-26.
