Padgett Takes Reins of Tennis Team, Squad Goes to Regional

Padgett officially took the reins of the program on Tuesday and
wasted little time getting up to speed as the Zips traveled to Ann
Arbor, Mich., on Wednesday to compete in the USTA/ITA Midwest
Championships on Thursday through next Tuesday. The event is being
held at Varsity Tennis Center on the Michigan campus.

Castro Cota and Natalia
Kuvakina will
each compete in Thursday's singles qualifying draw. On Friday, the
Zips' pairs of Zara
Harutyunyan and Angelina
Jogasuria, Angelika
Jogasuria and Prang
Pantusart, Baronayte and Kuvakina, and Benjamin and Castro Cota
will take part in the doubles main draw.
Singles qualifying play will run Thursday and Friday as the
field of 48 qualifiers will be trimmed to eight. Those eight
individuals will be entered into the 48-person singles main draw,
which will begin on Saturday and conclude on Tuesday.
Doubles play will consist of a 48-team main draw, slated to begin
with two rounds of play on Friday. A champion will be crowned on
Monday.
Winners of the singles and doubles main draw earn a berth to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Nov. 4-7 at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
Consolation action for each draw will be optional and completed
only if time and weather permit.
Participating schools include host Michigan, Akron, Cleveland
State, DePaul, Detroit, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Michigan,
Illinois, IPFW, Michigan State, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio
State, Toledo, Western Michigan, Wisconsin and Youngstown
State.
