Tennis Finishes Day One at USTA/ITA Regional Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Four University of Akron tennis players competed in Thursday's singles qualifying draw at the USTA/ITA Midwest Championships, held at Varsity Tennis Center on the Michigan campus. All four dropped their opening round match.
Anya Baronayte gave up a 6-4, 6-3 decision to Ohio State's Noelle Malley, but rebounded with a 3-6, 6-1, 10-6 defeat of Cleveland State's Catrine Bjerrehus in the consolation bracket. Also representing the Zips was Carolina Castro Cota, who suffered a 6-0, 6-4 loss to Ohio State's Tiffany Dittmer; Jeremie Benjamin, who lost 6-4, 6-2 to Cleveland State's Nicole Janek; and Natalia Kuvakina, who fell 6-5, def., to Toledo's Ashley Frey. Benjamin also compete in the consolation flight, losing 6-4, 6-0 to Eastern Michigan's Mariya Toncheva.
On Friday, the UA pairs of Zara Harutyunyan and Angelina Jogasuria, Angelika Jogasuria and Prang Pantusart, Baronayte and Kuvakina, and Benjamin and Castro Cota will take part in the doubles main draw competition.
