Tennis Posts Strong Doubles Play at ITA Championships

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - The University of Akron doubles team of Zara Harutyunyan and Angelina Jogasuria posted an 8-3 victory over the nation's preseason fourth-ranked pair of Whitney Taney and Rika Tatsuno from Michigan on Friday in the main draw consolation bracket of the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships.
The Zips pair was eliminated from the consolation flight on Saturday, falling 8-5 to Florida's Sofie Oyen and Allie Will.
Harutyunyan and Jogasuria lost in the main draw opening round of 32 on Friday to Mississippi's Kristi Boxx and Abby Guthrie, 8-6. Boxx and Guthrie are listed 15th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's preseason rankings. On Wednesday, Harutyunyan and Jogasuria scored a pair of wins in the qualifying bracket, topping Mississippi's Gabby Rangel and Connor Vogel 8-6, and then UCLA's McCall Jones and Pamela Montez 8-3 to advance to the main draw. Rangel and Vogel are ranked 27th nationally.
Earlier in the week in qualifying singles play, Harutyunyan posted a 6-3, 6-2 loss to UCLA's McCall Jones in the opening round of 64, but countered with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Boise State's Lauren Megale in the consolation flight.
Last weekend, Jogasuria represented the Zips in the pre-qualifying singles portion of the event, but was unable to advance herself to the qualifying draw. Read complete recap from Oct. 3.
