Tennis Finishes Fall Schedule at Purdue Invitational

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The University of Akron tennis team posted eight singles victories and a pair of doubles wins on Saturday and Sunday in the final two days of the Purdue Invitational at Schwartz Tennis Center. The round-robin event featured a dual-match format, but was not team scored. The field of teams consisted of UA, Purdue, Denver and Louisville.
Versus Denver on Sunday, the Zips earned four straight-set singles wins. Zara Harutyunyan defeated Elena Najera 6-0, 6-2; Angelina Jogasuria took care of Sophia Bergner 6-4, 6-3; Angelika Jogasuria topped Emma Isberg 6-3, 7-5; and Anya Baronayte bested Natalie Dunn, 6-2, 6-3.
On Saturday, UA faced off against Louisville on both the singles and doubles court. In singles, Angelina Jogasuria posted a 6-2, 6-3 decision over Mandy Brown, Angelika Jogasuria defeated Kaysara Mandry 2-6, 6-2, 6-0; Baronayte downed Gabi Duncan 6-1, 6-2; and Natalia Kuvakina knocked off Stephanie Villajuan 6-2, 6-1.
Against the Cardinals in doubles, Angelika Jogasuria and Prang Pantusart scored an 8-3 win over Villajuan and Amelia Harris, and Kuvakina and Baronayte got the best of Duncan and Mandry, 8-5.
Both Baronayte and Angelina Jogasuria finished the three-day event with 3-0 records in singles play.
UA's participation in the Purdue Invite marked the close of the
fall component of the team's schedule. The Zips will be idle until
Jan. 15-17, when they travel to Fort Myers, Fla., to compete in the
Florida Gulf Coast Hilton Garden Inn
Invitational.
