Tennis Notches 6-1 Road Win Over Bowling Green
April 23 | Women's Tennis
- The nationally-ranked University of Akron tennis team opened the final weekend of the regular season with a 6-1 victory over Bowling Green on Friday in Mid-American Conference competition outdoors at Keefe Courts.
After giving up the doubles point for the second time in as many matches, 73rd-ranked Akron (17-2, 6-1 MAC) swept play at all six singles flights to extend the program's single-season record for most league wins and tie the 1992-93 squad's 17-victory tally (team finished that season 17-5). The Zips remain in a second-place tie in the conference standings with Western Michigan (14-9, 6-1), which defeated Buffalo (7-8, 3-4) 4-3 on Friday. UA competes at WMU on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET. Fans can follow that contest via live stats through WMUBroncos.com.
On the doubles court, Bowling Green (12-8, 2-5) earned wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 positions to claim the early one-point advantage. The Akron pair of Zara Harutyunyan and Anya Baronayte claimed an 8-3 win over Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel at No. 2, but the Zips' team of identical twins Angelina Jogasuria and Angelika Jogasuria lost 8-3 at No. 1 to Christine Chiricosta and Mandy Eccleston, and UA's Prang Pantusart and Carolina Castro Cota gave up an 8-5 decision, and the first point of the match, at No. 3 to Jessica Easdale and Katie Grubb.
UA faced little resistance in the first through fourth flights
of singles. Harutyunyan, ranked 113th nationally in singles, won
6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 over Chiricosta; Angelina Jogasuria scored
a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Babina at No. 2; Angelika Jogasuria
earned a 6-4, 6-4 decision at No. 3 versus Kintzel and Pantusart
tallied a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4 against Easdale. At the No. 5 spot,
Baronayte hung tough to win her first set 7-6 (6) and then cruised
to a 6-2 win in the second frame over Eccleston. Jeremie
Benjamin pushed her match at No. 6 into a third set, winning by
a score of 6-7 (2), 6-2, 10-7 against Grubb.
Akron scored its second-straight win over Bowling Green and posted
its first road win versus the Falcons since April 24, 1993
(7-2).
After this weekend, the Zips will prepare themselves for the MAC Championship, which runs April 29-May 2 (Thursday-Sunday) on the Western Michigan campus in Kalamazoo. The winner will earn the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
