April 30 | Women's Tennis
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - University of Akron sophomore tennis player Zara Harutyunyan (Yerevan, Armenia/Yerevan Secondary School No. 134) was named Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, while Zips' freshman Angelina Jogasuria (Serpong, Indonesia (St. John's School/Sman 1 Pamulang) was selected as the league's freshman of the year, the conference office announced on Thursday night at the annual MAC Championship awards banquet. Harutyunyan and Angelina Jogasuria also earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team, while Angelika Jogasuria (Serpong, Indonesia/St. John's School/Sman 1 Pamulang), Angelina's identical twin, was placed on the All-MAC Second Team.
The league's nine head coaches voted on the all-conference team and specialty awards.
Harutyunyan, who is currently ranked 104th nationally in singles and represents the Zips at the No. 1 flight, was chosen as player of the year for the second-straight season, as she was the first UA player and first freshman to earn the honor in 2009 (was also named first-team all-conference last season). She finished the 2010 regular-season with a 34-5 overall singles record, including a 19-1 mark versus dual competition and was 8-0 against MAC foes. Harutyunyan is 24-8 overall on the doubles court (14-5 dual, 6-2 MAC).
Angelina Jogasuria is the first Akron tennis player to claim the honor of MAC Freshman of the Year, which comes on the heels of a rookie campaign in which she played No. 2 singles - compiling an 8-0 record in league play and an 18-1 dual mark, en route to a 29-6 overall tally. She went 29-7 overall in doubles (15-4 dual, 5-3 MAC), playing mostly at the No. 2 slot.
Angelika Jogasuria is the third Zip in as many seasons to earn a spot on the all-conference second team. She has posted the second-most singles victories on the squad thus far this season, with a 32-7 overall record. She was 6-2 in singles during the conference schedule and 15-5 in dual-match play, competing at the No. 3 flight. In doubles she went 28-9 overall (15-5 dual, 7-1 MAC), lining up mostly at the No. 1 position.
Joining Harutyunyan and Angelina Jogasuria with
first-team honors were Anastasia Dracheva (Miami), Denise Harijanto
(Buffalo), Christine Chiricosta (Bowling Green) and Martina
Wodzinski (Toledo). Along with Angelika Jogasuria,
second-team honors went to Alexsandra Petrova (Buffalo), Stephanie
Danesis (Miami), Megan Martzolf (Miami), Maha Guirguis (Toledo) and
Emily Dudzik (Western Michigan).
Miami's Ricardo Rosas was named coach of the year, while Ball
State's Hayley Hall was given the Leann Grimes Davidge
Sportsmanship Award.
Thursday marked the first time UA has placed two
student-athletes on the All-MAC First Team in the same season, with
the Zips' three all-league selections this year tying Miami as most
of any league member.
Second-seeded Akron (18-2, 7-1 MAC) will face seventh-seeded
Bowling Green (12-9, 2-6) in the quarterfinal round of the MAC
Championship on Friday at 2 p.m. ET. The event is being held on the
Western Michigan campus in Kalamazoo. Fans can follow live stats of
each match via the MAC Championship Central page.
The Zips clinched a bye out of the league championship's
first-round for the second-consecutive year, after achieving their
highest-ever finish in the conference standings. Akron finished the
year with a program single-season record for league wins and
tallied the most overall victories since the 1990-91 squad posted a
26-6 mark. The tournament winner will earn the conference's
automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. Akron is looking to achieve
its first-ever MAC title.
