ATHENS, Ga. - The following is a blog from University of Akron sophomore Zara Harutyunyan, who qualified for the 2010 NCAA Women's Singles Tennis Championships and begins play on Wednesday at the University of Georgia.
Harutyunyan, the two-time Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, will face Danielle Lao of Southern California in the first round.
ZARA'S BLOG - May 24:
Leaving for the individual NCAA Tennis Championships from the Akron
airport was really different, not having the team around. But as I
have the "Zips" uniform on, I know that I am representing every
single person from my team. I feel like I have been waiting for
this a very long time and it is finally here. During these three
weeks while I was getting ready for the tournament, coaches (Jeffrey) Wyshner and (Andy)
Roland worked very hard so I can represent the Zips in the best
way.
On the plane, Coach Wyshner was a genius on crossword puzzles as he knows every single answer (haha) and I am just sitting there reading a magazine.
Athens, Ga., is where the NCAA Championships are being held and I would definitely say that it is a very unique city. I was surprised and somewhat shocked when we arrived to the tennis facility. The men's team semifinals were going on when we got there and it was just something crazy different. I have been to a lot professional tournaments to watch the players play, but watching the NCAA Championship is just a totally different and amazing experience. Obviously, the crowd was intense and the players extremely emotional as they were fighting for every single point.
Lastly, I think winning is what every single competitive athlete wants. At the same time, I think the most important thing is knowing when you get out there you are giving 100 percent and even more.
