KALAMAZOO, Mich. - University of Akron freshman tennis student-athlete Prang Pantusart (Amphur Muang, Nonthaburi, Thailand/Distance Education Institute) was one of six players selected to the Mid-American Conference Championship All-Tournament Team, announced late Sunday night following the conclusion of the event on the Western Michigan campus.
Pantusart, who posted a combined 4-0 record (2-0 singles, 2-0 doubles) over the weekend at the conference tournament, is the first-ever Zip to earn this honor. She helped second-seeded UA to a 4-1 win over seventh-seeded Bowling Green in Friday's quarterfinal, and then scored a doubles and singles win in the squad's 4-3 loss to third-seeded Western Michigan in semifinal play on Saturday. Pantusart closed out her rookie season with a 31-9 overall record in singles (16-4 dual) and 26-11 cumulative mark on the doubles court (15-5 dual).
Pantusart's inclusion on the all-tournament team rounded out an impressive list of postseason conference accolades for the Zips. At last Thursday's tournament banquet, UA sophomore Zara Harutyunyan was named MAC Player of the Year, while Angelina Jogasuria was selected as the league's freshman of the year. Harutyunyan and Jogasuria also earned a spot on the All-MAC First Team. Angelika Jogasuria, Angelina's identical twin, was placed on the All-MAC Second Team. It marked the first time UA has placed two student-athletes on the All-MAC First Team in the same season, with the Zips' three all-league selections this year tying Miami (Ohio) as most of any league member.
Harutyunyan, who is currently ranked 104th in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (new poll is due out later today), was chosen as player of the year and first-team all-league for the second-straight season.
Akron was also the recipient of a league-best six player of the week awards this season.
Top-seeded Miami defeated Western Michigan 4-1 in Sunday's championship match.
