June 23 | Men's Golf
Throughout the month of June, GoZips.com will revisit the
2009-10 highlights of each of the University of Akron's 19 varsity
sports in a special series titled 2009-10 Year In ROO-view. Each
weekday, one shining moment per sport will be featured along with a
recap of that team's overall season. During the first week of July,
fans will have the opportunity to select their top-three favorites.
The latest installment looks at men's golf...
AKRON, Ohio - Posting the second best finish
in the history of the program, The University of Akron men's golf
team placed third at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championship
(April 29-May 1) at the par-72, 7,243-yard Longaberger Golf
Club.
Carding a combined 1,196 through four rounds, the Zips continued to improve each round carding a 306 and 302 during day one, a 295 for the third round and a 293 to conclude the event.
"I am very pleased with the way our team played," said third
year head coach Nick Goetze at the time of
the event. "After a solid fall season, we were getting frustrated
with our struggles this spring. However, we kept the faith with our
training, knowing that the results would come.
"Our boys earned every bit of this achievement. In team meetings
I've often explained how our statistical improvements were getting
us so close to being a consistent contender in the MAC and NCAA
postseason. Our performance was certainly a validation of how our
small improvements are adding up to big time success."
Junior Lucas Murray finished first for UA and tied for ninth overall carding a 297. Posting a 76 and 78 after day one, Murray stepped up to card a 72 and 71 to finish his first MAC Championship. Sophomore Scott Landreth also was a solid part of the Zips success shooting a 298 (76-71-77-74) for a 12th place finish.
Senior Jacob Patte finished tied for 19th carding a 303 (74-78-75-76) while freshman Cameron Simmons followed close behind with a 304 (81-76-75-72). Junior Doug Underwood rounded out the Zips scorecard with a 308 (80-77-73-78).
Adding to their success this year, Murray and Patte were honored
by the Mid-American Conference following the conclusion of the
regular season.
Murray grabbed second team All-MAC honors and finished the year
with a team low 73.31 scoring average competing in all 36 rounds of
play. Murray posted nine top-25 marks including a first place
finish at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 5-6).
Patte, the lone senior for UA, posted a second best 74.54 scoring average on the year to garner MAC Sportsman of the Year honors finishing in the top-25 in six events this season.
On Thursday, GoZips.com will review the UA women's golf
season.
