Wyshner Accepts New Post with Wake Forest Tennis
August 27 | Women's Tennis
AKRON, Ohio - University of Akron head women's tennis coach Jeffrey Wyshner announced on Friday that he has accepted the same position at Wake Forest. A 17-year head coaching veteran, Wyshner has led Zips tennis through an impressive rebuild in his four seasons at the helm. A national search is underway to find his replacement.
In 2009-10, UA finished with a program single-season record for league wins (7-1) and tallied the most overall victories (19-3) since the 1990-91 squad posted a 26-6 mark. Additionally, the Zips opened the dual-match portion of their season with a 15-match win streak and were the nation's last undefeated Division I squad. UA's impressive start earned it a season-high and program-best national ranking of 63rd by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association during the first week of April.
"Jeff has done an extraordinary job at Akron," UA Director of Athletics Tom Wistrcill said. "He inherited a program that had not been competitive in the Mid-American Conference, but in a short period of time built a team as good as any in the region and this past year led the squad to its best season in school history. It is obvious why he was an attractive choice to lead the program at Wake Forest. While I'm definitely sorry to see him leave, he is very deserving of his new position and I wish him all the best. We look forward to finding the next leader for our great tennis program."
Also in 2009-10, the Zips clinched a bye out of the MAC championship's first-round for the second-consecutive year, after achieving their highest-ever finish in the conference standings. Second-seeded Akron was edged 4-3 by third-seeded Western Michigan in the semifinal round of the MAC Championship - advancing farther into the league tournament than any other squad in program history.
"It is impossible for me to convey the incredibly special opportunity that coaching at Akron has been for me," Wyshner said. "The student-athletes on the team are exceptional athletes and, more importantly, exceptional people. I have been very lucky to have had the chance to be a part of their lives. The University and the athletics department gave us the support to build a top program of which the Akron community could be proud."
