Western Michigan Takes Down Akron 3-0

AKRON, Ohio – Senior outside hitter Courtney Jarvis recorded a match-high 12 kills, but The University of Akron volleyball team fell in straight sets to Western Michigan (21-25, 26-28, 18-25) Saturday evening at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Zips (4-17, 1-7) wore pink jerseys for Dig for a Cure night, as all proceeds raised from t-shirt sales will be donated to Akron Children's Hospital.
Also reaching double figures for Akron was freshman Kymberle Gordon, who totaled 10 kills and just one error on 17 attempts for a .529 hitting percentage. Gordon also added a match-high four block assists, helping the Zips notch 8.0 total blocks. Junior Morgan Kuhn tallied 35 assists and a team-best 13 digs for a double-double on the night.
The first set saw Akron build a 6-2 lead before the Broncos (16-5, 6-2) came back to even the score. With things still tied at 21 apiece, WMU went on a four-point run on four kills to earn the set and take the early advantage.
In the second frame, the Zips played mostly from behind but managed to keep it close throughout. Trailing 17-20, Akron evened the score at 20 all with the assist of two Bronco errors, but the Zips would again fall behind by two at 21-23. A kill by Alex Cocklin and an ace from Mary Delich tied it up at 23, and UA earned set point on a kill by Alex Wiederholt. The Broncos called a timeout and bounced back to save the set point, and the set remained knotted at 26 until WMU put it away on back-to-back kills, 28-26.
Akron got down early again in the third and trailed 10-6. The Broncos went on to extend their lead to 17-10, as UA struggled to get back in the set. Facing a 22-12 deficit, the Zips won three consecutive points to close the gap. Still down 24-16, Akron continued to fight and saved two match points before a WMU kill ended the set and the match.
The Zips will hit the road next weekend with dates at Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan to continue cross-divisional play.
