PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. – University of Akron senior tennis player Zara Harutyunyan advanced herself to the singles prequalifying round of 16 at the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships on Saturday.
Harutyunyan, listed 118th in the ITA's preseason rankings, defeated LSU's Olivia Howlett 6-2, 6-4 in the opening round of 64 and then disposed of William & Mary's Marlen Mesgarzadeh 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 32. She will face off against North Carolina's Lauren McHale on Sunday for the right to advance to the singles qualifier.
Also representing Akron in the event's singles prequalifier was junior Prang Pantusart, who lost her opening round contest 6-4, 6-3 to Maryland's Anna Belzunce.
Harutyunyan and Pantusart teamed up in Saturday's doubles prequalifier as well. They lost to Memphis' Stefanie Mikesz and Mariya Slupska 8-3 in the opening round of 32.

The Riviera is one of three national championship events for collegiate tennis, with the other two being the ITA National Indoor Championships and the NCAA Championships.
In other Akron tennis news, due to a late weekend scheduling change the program did not send any players to the Fall Mid-American Conference Invite in Kalamazoo, Mich.
