Shkundina Advances to Singles Main Draw Round of 16 at Midwest Regional

COLUMBUS – With a pair of victories on Saturday, University of Akron freshman Olga Shkundina advanced herself to the singles main draw round of 16 during day three of competition at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships at Ohio State.
Shkundina, who won three matches between Thursday and Friday to move out of the qualifying bracket, defeated Michigan's Kristy Dodge 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 in today's main draw opening round of 48 and then topped Illinois' Rachel White 6-0, 6-3 in the round of 32.
White, also a freshman, was listed as the No. 20 singles player in the USTA Girls' 18 Midwest section rankings and was No. 51 in the USTA Girls' 18 national rankings as a high school senior. Shkundina, who hails from Ufa, Russia, is 15 years old.
Shkundina will take on Michigan's Emina Bektas on Sunday.
Also representing the Zips in the singles main draw was senior Zara Harutyunyan and junior Prang Pantusart. Harutyunyan, who had a first-round bye as one of 16 seeded players, lost 6-3, 7-6 (3) to Ohio State's Kara Cecil in the round of 32. Pantusart fell by a score of 6-1, 6-2 to Illinois' Melissa Kopinski in the round of 48.
In Saturday's doubles main draw round of 16, the UA pair of Angelika Jogasuria and Angelina Jogasuria lost to Illinois' White and Kopinski 8-5, while Harutyunyan and Pantusart were upset by Notre Dame's Chrissie McGaffigan and Jennifer Kellner by the same score.

The winners of the event's singles and doubles main draw earn a berth to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Nov. 3-6 at the USTA–Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
