Tennis Closes Out Competition at Midwest Regional Championships

COLUMBUS – After winning five matches in three days and advancing herself from the singles qualifying bracket to the main draw, University of Akron tennis player Olga Shkundina's run at the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships ended Sunday in the round of 16.
The 15-year-old freshman from Ufa, Russia, did not go down easy, losing 7-5, 7-6 (0) to Michigan's Emina Bektas.
Shkundina won three matches between Thursday and Friday in the qualifying draw and posted victories on Saturday in the main draw round of 48 and 32. Her competition today completed UA's involvement in the event, which runs through Tuesday at Ohio State.

The winners of the event's singles and doubles main draw earn a berth to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Nov. 3-6 at the USTA–Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
