Ohio Sweeps Zips in Friday Night Division Battle

AKRON, Ohio – Junior Paiton Twitty recorded a career-high eight kills, but The University of Akron volleyball team fell in three sets (22-25, 16-25, 20-25) to Ohio Friday night at James A. Rhodes Arena. The Zips are now 3-15 on the season and 0-5 in the Mid-American Conference, while Ohio improves to 13-6 and 5-0. The Bobcats have yet to drop to drop a set in MAC play this year.
On the night, senior Courtney Jarvis led the UA attack, as she finished with 13 kills and a .231 hitting percentage. Twitty hit .357 with just three errors in 14 attempts, and setter Morgan Kuhn added 30 assists, 10 digs and four kills on seven attempts. As a team, Akron hit .205 to Ohio's .311. Each team notched 2.0 blocks for the match.
In the opening set, the Zips owned a 10-8 advantage until Ohio reeled off five-straight points to take a 13-10 lead. The Bobcats went on to earn set point at 24-17, but Akron fought back and won the next five points to make it 24-22. Ohio killed the rally on the next point, however, to take the first set.
In set number two, Akron again held a slight 10-8 lead early in the frame. The scoring went back and forth until the Bobcats pulled away with a 17-13 margin. UA won the next two points, but Ohio did not let the Zips get much closer, going on a seven-point run to put the set out of reach and win 25-16.
The final set began just like the first two, with UA taking an early lead at 12-9. Ohio bounced back to tie it at 14 all. With the score still knotted at 17, the Bobcats took the next two points to gain a narrow cushion. The teams traded points, but Akron could not gain the upper hand. Ahead just 21-20, Ohio went on a four-point run to close the door on the Zips, taking the set 25-20.
The Zips return to the JAR on Saturday, Oct. 8, to take on rival Kent State in the first contest of the PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge. The match is slated to begin at 5 p.m. ET.
