AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron women's tennis team continues to bring in postseason honors and awards, as three student-athletes earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar-Athlete Awards earlier this week. UA also earned the ITA All-Academic Team Award for the 2010-11 season, during which it won the program's first-ever Mid-American Conference Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
"I am extremely pleased to see our team and three individuals recognized for their outstanding academic achievements," first-year Akron head coach Brandon Padgett said. "We have such wonderful student-athletes within this program. It is nice to see them recognized for something other than just their athletic accomplishments."
Anya Baronayte, Angelina Jogasuria, and Natalia Kuvakina each earned the ITA Scholar-Athlete Award after completing the 2010-11 academic year with grade-point averages of 3.5 or better and earning varsity letters for their contributions on the court. Baronayte and Jogasuria received the award for the second-straight season.
By completing the 2010-11 academic year with a team GPA above 3.2, the UA tennis program received the ITA All-Academic Team Award. It is the second-straight year the UA tennis team has been so honored
"These young women are much more than just tennis players," Padgett said. "We are building leaders within our tennis family in every way; in the classroom, on the court, and in the community. I am very proud of them."
