Zippy's Top 10 Countdown: No. 7
July 14 | Men's Golf
G'day Zips fans.
There's nothing more I like to do in the summer than play a round at the golf course. With that in mind, No. 7 in my countdown of the top-10 stories of the 2010-11 season comes from the men's golf team and its dominant victory at the Illini Spring Classic in April.
Playing against seven teams ranked in the Golfstat Top 100 and nine of 11 Big Ten squads, the Zips earned a 10-stroke victory to launch them into the Golfstat Top-100 rankings for the first time since the end of the 2006-07 season.
What was most impressive was the Zips extending their lead from three strokes to 10 strokes over the final nine holes...in tough weather conditions no less.
I was so excited to see the guys post the biggest win in program history and probably the biggest win in the Mid-American Conference on the season.
Freshman Charlie Bull, sophomore Cameron Simmons and junior Scott Landreth led the way, with all three players finishing tied for third place. I cannot forget senior Lucas Murray and redshirt sophomore Tim Lew finishing tied for 18th.
In the end, it was awesome to see the Zips featured several times by Golfweek Magazine and on the local sports show "Big Time Sports."
In all, the 27th win in program history will be the one I remember most.
