AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team earned another academic honor on Wednesday as the squad was recognized as one of 59 teams to be named to the All-Academic Team at the Division I level by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The Zips were just one of two schools on the list from the Mid-American Conference (Northern Illinois). In July, the GCAA named former University of Akron men's golfer and current volunteer coach Lucas Murray and current senior Scott Landreth as 2011 Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars.
"This is a real honor for our student-athletes, both past and present," head coach David Trainor said. "Their hard work and diligence in the classroom goes along way. I defer a lot of the credit to our academic staff for all their hard work with each and every student-athlete on the team."
The men's squad finished the 2010-11 academic year with an overall team GPA of 3.223. To be eligible for GCAA All-Academic Team honors a college of university must submit the grade points earned and hours attempted for each player on its official squad list for the academic year.
In addition to academic honors from the GCAA, Murray was named First-Team Academic All-MAC in June, while Landreth, Tim Lew and Cameron Simmons were named Honorable Mention Academic All-MAC.
