AKRON, Ohio – Concluding the opening weekend of Mid-American Conference action, Ball State defeated The University of Akron 3-1 (18-25, 25-20, 10-25, 14-25) on Saturday at James A. Rhodes Arena. With the loss, the Zips fall to 3-12 on the season and 0-2 in the MAC, while the Cardinals improve to 13-2 and 2-0 in the league.
Senior Courtney Jarvis led UA's attack with 14 kills and a .208 hitting percentage, while freshman Mary Delich added nine kills. On defense, Jill Paluch and Chelsea Harvey each notched 13 digs. As a team, Akron hit .116 for the match and turned in 4.0 team blocks.
The first set was a close affair, with Ball State leading 13-10, until the Cardinals went on a five-point run and took an 18-10 advantage that would ultimately put the set out of reach. The second frame was a different story, as the Zips jumped out to a 5-1 lead and eventually led 17-10. BSU fought its way back to trail just 22-19, but several Cardinal errors gave the set to Akron, 25-20, and leveled the match.
After the intermission, UA was not able to challenge in the third set, falling into a 13-4 hole early. Ball State went on to close the door quickly, allowing the Zips just 10 points. In the fourth, Akron trailed by one at 7-6 until BSU took four consecutive points to take control. Down 19-8, UA managed to win three points in a row, but the Cardinals recovered and closed out the match with a 25-14 win.
The Zips hit the road next weekend to face MAC East foes Bowling Green and Miami (Ohio) on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1, respectively.
