FRANKLIN, Tenn. – Sophomore Charlie Bull led a charge up the leaderboard for The University of Akron men's golf team, posting a career-best 5-under par 66, to move into a first-place tie after two rounds at the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate on Saturday.
Bull's round included six birdies, one eagle and three bogeys. His previous career-low round was a 68 during the second round of the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invitational (March 7, 2011).
The Zips posted the third-lowest round of the tournament with their 4-under 280 at the par-71, 7,100-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club. Akron is in sixth place (573, +5) and is nine shots out the lead, which is held by Oklahoma (564, -4).
Junior Cameron Simmons and senior Ryan Mason each posted rounds of even-par 71 to help the Zips move up in the field. Simmons closed the day tied for 20th place at 2-over 144 while Mason is tied for 27th with a score of 145 (+3).
Senior Scott Landreth carded a round of 75 (+4) and is in a group tied in 40th place with a two-day score of 148 (+6).
Freshman Harry Whittle rebounded from a tough first round to post a 1-over 72 to climb into a tie for 67th with a two-round tally of 154 (+12).
