Spartan Invitational Final Results
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Ksenia Berestetska was crowned champion of flight C singles to post one of four top-three finishes by the Akron tennis team on Sunday in the last day of the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State. The Zips closed out the three-day tournament with a 23-9 overall record, going 5-1 today.
Berestetska topped UIC's Haley Craig 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the flight C title match. UA's Natalia Kuvakina finished third in the bracket, winning today by default over Michigan State's Gruber due to injury.
The Zips team of identical twins Angelika and Angelina Jogasuria finished third in flight A doubles, disposing of Purdue's Gisella Pere and Imogen Golder, 8-6. Zara Harutyunyan and Olga Shkundina finished fifth in the draw, winning 8-4 over Marquette's Olga Fischer and Rocio Diaz.
"After having thrown three new doubles teams out there this weekend, we are pretty happy with our overall results," second-year Akron head coach Brandon Padgett said. "Each team came away with one loss, each one being close."
Angelika Jogasuria and Harutyunyan met in the winners consolation of flight A singles, a match to decide third and fourth place, and agreed not to play one another.
Also in flight A singles consolation play, Shkundina defeated Purdue's Anna Dushkina 6-3, 1-6, 10-6.
In flight B singles, Angelina Jogasuria lost to Golder 6-2, 1-6, 10-3 to finish in sixth place.
"We had some mixed results in singles this weekend, but overall we did a solid job," Padgett said. "Ksenia played a tough match in the final, and was able to pull it out."
Akron returns to action this weekend, with players competing in the Fall Mid-American Conference Invitational at Western Michigan and at the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships in southern California.
