September 03 | Women's Volleyball
AKRON, Ohio – With a 3-1 win over Canisius, The University of Akron volleyball team claimed the Akron Invitational title by going undefeated and only dropping one set. The Zips improve to 3-4 on the season after rallying to win the final three sets against the Golden Griffins (23-25, 25-21, 25-17, 25-15).
As a team, the Zips played particularly well in the last two sets, hitting over .500 in each and making only two errors to go along with 33 total kills. For the match, UA notched 55 kills to just nine errors for a .377 hitting percentage. Seniors Tina Dimitrijevs and Courtney Jarvis led Akron with 16 and 14 kills, respectively, and only five errors between them. Junior setter Morgan Kuhn joined the seniors on the All-Tournament Team after recording 47 assists and five service aces.
Freshman Kymberle Gordon added nine kills, while sophomore Alex Cocklin turned in seven on 14 attempts with just one errors for a .429 attack percentage. Junior libero Chelsea Harvey tallied 16 digs and three service aces to anchor the Zips defense.
Akron started out slow in the first set and trailed 15-10 but battled back to make it close. After the Zips tied it at 23 all, Canisius (4-2) took the next two points for the win.
In the second set, UA again faced an early deficit but managed to stay in it, down just one at 14-15. Then a run of six consecutive points by Akron, all on the serve of Kuhn, put the Zips ahead 20-17. Canisius could not reclaim the lead, and two straight kills by Dimitrijevs sealed the set.
In the third, Akron jumped out to an 8-3 lead early in the set after a string of five consecutive points on the serve of Dimitrijevs. The Griffs got as close as 14-11, but the Zips would go on to put the set away without much trouble. Four points in a row on Jill Paluch's serve late in the set helped UA with the win, and a kill by Jarvis sent it to the fourth.
Canisius started with a 3-0 lead, but Akron came back to tie it at 4-4 in the fourth. The Zips put together another run of five straight points to gain the upper hand and held a 17-10 lead. UA only allowed Canisius to score five more times as it marched on to the win.
Akron will be back in action next weekend at the UW-Milwaukee/Marquette Tournament on Sept. 9 & 10.
