AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron tennis team is back in action this weekend, with members of the program traveling to Pacific Palisades, Calif., to participate in the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships and the remainder of the squad heading to the Fall Mid-American Conference Invite in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Zips senior and reigning MAC Player-of-the-Year Zara Harutyunyan along with junior and all-league selection Prang Pantusart will represent the team at the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships, with each scheduled to compete in the prequalifying bracket of singles and then join forces in the prequalifying doubles draw. The Riviera is one of three national championship events for collegiate tennis, with the other two being the ITA National Indoor Championships and the NCAA Championships.
Harutyunyan, listed 118th in the ITA's preseason rankings, is competing in the Riviera event for the third-consecutive season. In 2010, she played in the singles qualifier and teamed with Angelina Jogasuria to advance to the main draw of doubles.
Also this weekend, members of the UA program will participate in the Fall MAC Invite, hosted by Western Michigan. Joining the Zips and Broncos in the field will be players from league schools Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Northern Illinois and Toledo. Play begins on Friday at 1 p.m., with second day action set to begin at 9 a.m.
This is the third weekend of competition for the Akron tennis program, which won its first-ever MAC championship in 2010. Harutyunyan and Pantusart won the doubles main draw championship at the Muirfield Collegiate Tennis Invitational at Ohio State (played on clay) on Sept. 18. Last weekend, the squad went 23-9 overall at the Spartan Invitational at Michigan State, with sophomore Ksenia Berestetska winning the title of flight C singles.
