Swimming and Diving Handed 168-130 Defeat by Buffalo

AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron swimming and diving team was handed a 168-130 loss by Buffalo on senior night at Ocasek Natatorium Friday afternoon.
The Zips (3-6, 1-4 Mid-American Conference) honored four seniors – Meghan Bowling, Meg Finnerty, Leeanna Hoover, and Jessica Ickes – prior to the meet.
Hoover won the 3-meter springboard with her second straight career-best score. Hoover easily outpaced second place Ava Giachino with a score of 316.05. The score was the second best 3-meter score in Akron history. Hoover would place second in the 1-meter event.
Kelsea Cross led a top three sweep of the 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.84. Becca Zimmer took second, with Kelsey Ferrante just off the pace in third. Cross has now won at least one backstroke event in each of Akron's past four meets. Cross would later take second in the 200-yard butterfly.
Zimmer and Finnerty captured a 1-2 finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Zimmer won the event by a mere .08 seconds with a time of 1:54.32.
Bowling took second in the 1,650-yard freestyle with a time of 17:44.53. Kendra Colby finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke. Rachel Szymkowiak finished second in the 200-yard breaststroke, with Colby taking third,
Catherine Carr lost out in a close 100-yard backstroke. Buffalo's Melissa Trail touched first in 59.52, with Carr just .20 seconds back. Ferrante finished third in the heat in 1:00.04. Carr would also take second in the 500-yard freestyle in 5:06.28, with Becca Emerich taking third in the event.
Jessica Ickes was the runner-up in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 24.35. Finnerty claimed third in the 100-yard freestyle, closing in 52.73.
Ickes, Taylor Hart, Ferrante, and Finnerty teamed up to capture the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:36.85.
UA will now take close to a month off from competition as it prepares for the 2012 MAC Championships at Ocasek Natatorium. The MAC Championship meet begins on Thursday Feb. 23 runs through Saturday Feb. 25. 2012.
