CLEVELAND – University of Akron junior golfer Charlie Bull was named Mid-American Conference Golfer of the Week, the league office announced on Wednesday.
Bull earned his third-career golfer of the week honor after winning the WKU Kenny Perry Invitational on Tuesday by one stroke (225, +9). The victory was the first of his collegiate career.
The field battled tough conditions, including strong winds, at The Club at Olde Stone in Bowling Green, Ky. (par 72, 7,248 yards). A constant 25 mph wind, with gusts reaching 40 mph, kept low scores at a minimum on Sunday. Bull posted a 6-over 78 during the first round to sit tied for eighth.
As conditions improved, so did scoring as Bull posted the low round of the tournament, a 2-under 70 on Monday, to move within three shots of the lead.
On Tuesday, the winds picked up again as Bull slowly reeled in the lead with a final-round 77 (+5).
For the fall, Bull posted four top-15 finishes in four events, posting a 73.36 average and helping the Zips to the No. 79 spot in the Oct. 10 Golfstat rankings, UA's highest ranking since April 2010 (No. 89).
Bull also earned Co-MAC Golfer of the Week on Oct. 6 and Oct. 12, 2011, following back-to-back third-place finishes at the D.A. Weibring Intercollegiate and The Firestone Invitational.
