AKRON, Ohio – University of Akron men's golf coach David Trainor announced on Tuesday that Chandler Morgan (Lexington, Ky.), Zach Gollwitzer (Ballwin, Mo.) and JB Williams (Danville, Ky.) have signed national letters of intent to play for the Zips at the start of the 2013-14 season.
"I am very happy with our class and welcome them with open arms to the Akron golf family," Trainor said. "All three golfers have performed very well on the national stage and have earned some well deserved accolades. I look forward to helping them reach their goals both on and off the course."
Morgan, a senior at Tates Creek High School, was a four-year letterwinner and was the first TCHS player to compete in the Kentucky State Championships two years in a row. He concluded his senior campaign with a 72.0 scoring average to earn All-City and All-Region honors. He won two Golfweek events in 2012, including the Golfweek Tour at the University of Kentucky (76-71) and the Golfweek Tour Championship at the University of Kentucky (73-69-70). He also added top-six finishes at the AJGA at Bellefonte (2nd, 69-73-66) and Men's City Championship (6th, 74-69-69-71) events.
"Chandler has loads of potential and is a fierce competitor," Trainor stated. "This past year alone, he has won several junior events and came close in a handful of others. He is not afraid to shoot low scores or to be near the lead."
Gollwiter, a senior at Marquette High School, comes to the Zips after posting the top individual finish at the State Championships for MHS, a tie for third place as a junior. He earned First-Team All-Suburban West Conference and First-Team All-Metro honors as a junior after posting a 73.00 scoring average. He tallied wins at the AJGA Preseason at Prairie Landing, the Plantations Golf Tour at Bogey Hills, the "Webster Cup" at Crescent Farms and the Junior PGA event at the Landings at Spirit Golf Club.
"Zach is a player who has been on a very steep learning curve. If he continues on his current trend, the sky is the limit," Trainor said. "He is a long hitter with great touch around the greens and a beautiful putting stroke. He played a lot of golf this summer and was extremely consistent. He got very comfortable when he was near the lead and I look for him to continue that trend."
Williams, a senior at Danville High School, was an All-State performer as a senior after posting a 71.5 scoring average and helping DHS to an undefeated conference slate. In four years at DHS, he improved his scoring average from 76.4 (freshman) to 71.5 (senior). During the summer of 2012, he played in the Kentucky section PGA Junior Championship, leading after the first round and tying the course record with a 65. During the 2011-12 Plantations Tour, he was the top point winner in his age group and finished third at the Plantation Tour Championship.
"JB is not only a talented golfer, but talented athlete. He played baseball, basketball and golf in high school, and it wasn't until this summer where he gave his full focus and showed what he is capable of achieving," Trainor said. "He won several junior events and led one of the biggest junior events in the world after tying the course record with a first round 65. JB can put some serious pressure on the golf course and shoot some very low numbers. I look forward to seeing what he can do when golf is his only focus."
The Zips will return to action Feb. 11-12 when they travel to Tampa, Fla., for the 2013 Mid-American Conference Match Play Event.
