Men's Golf Heads to Illinois for MAC Championships

AKRON, Ohio – The Akron men's golf team will look to claim the Mid-American Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional Championships this weekend when it travels to Sugar Grover, Ill., for the 2012 MAC Championship event on the par-72, 6,978-yard Rich Harvest Farms Golf Course.
Northern Illinois will play host to this year's championship event, which will include four rounds over three days. Rounds one and two will be played on Friday, with round-one tee times set to begin at 9 a.m. ET from the first and tenth tees. Round two will follow at approximate 2 p.m., also teeing off from the first and tenth tees. Saturday and Sunday's tee times will also begin at 9 a.m. from the first tee box. With Akron and Kent State facing off this weekend, the championship event will serve as the lone PNC Wagon Wheel Challenge opportunity, with the higher-finishing squad earning a point for their respective school. Following the MAC Women's Golf Championship, Kent State holds a 6.0-4.0 advantage.
Kent State enters the event as the three-time defending champion after winning last year's title by 29 strokes. The Zips finished in fourth place for their third-consecutive top-four finish. Cameron Simmons led the way, earning all-tournament team honors after finishing tied for fifth place with a four-round score of 294 (+6).
Akron is coming off a tenth-place finish on April 22 at the 2012 Boilermaker Invitational. The Zips posted a round of 13-over 301 to finish the event with a 54-hole tally of 53-over 917. Ryan Mason posted his third-straight top-25 finish, concluding the invitational in a tie for 18th place with a three-round tally of 223 (+7) after carding a round of 74 (+2) on the day.
UA has posted nine top-10 finishes in 11 events this season and were led by sophomore Charlie Bull's 73.28 scoring average. He posted six top-25 finishes and ranks sixth in the MAC in scoring average. His round of 66 during the second round of the Mason Rudolph Intercollegiate is tied for the third-lowest round of the year in the conference.
