AKRON, Ohio – The University of Akron men's golf team opens the 2012-13 season on Sunday when it hits the course for The Invitational at Kiawah on The Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.
The three-day tournament will begin on Sunday with tee times set to start from the first and 10th tees at 8 a.m. ET. The second round will also begin at 8 a.m. Monday while the final round is slated for a 7:30 a.m. start on Tuesday. All three rounds can be followed live via Golfstat Live Scoring. The Ocean Course was home to the 2012 PGA Championship in August.
"We are looking forward to starting the season tomorrow at a very good course," head coach David Trainor said. "We have a good mix of experienced upperclassmen that have played a lot of golf and some freshmen ready to compete on the college level. It will be good to see how the freshmen progress and how the upperclassmen continue to progress from last season."
Joining the Zips at the event will be the No. 87 College of Charleston (host), Davidson, No. 18 Florida, No. 83 Georgia Southern, No. 56 Houston, No. 91 Mercer, No. 10 South Carolina-Aiken (DII), No. 98 South Florida, St. John's, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State, No. 66 Texas-Arlington, No. 38 UAB and South Carolina-Upstate. UA is ranked No. 114 in the Golfstat rankings.
Akron returns five players from last season, led by junior Charlie Bull and seniors Tim Lew and Cameron Simmons. Bull became the first player since the Zips made the jump to Division I Golf to qualify for the NCAA Regional Championship and became UA's first golfer to be named to the PING All-Region team (Midwest) by the Golf Coaches Association of America.
The Zips also have the services of sophomores Miguel Meyer and Harry Whittle. Joining the squad this season are freshmen Louis Birchall, Ryan Harris and Carr Vernon.
